Yayoi Kusama Pumpkins

This video takes a look at Yayoi Kusama’s “Pumpkin” from 2016, as seen in the permanent collection at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. While Kusama has made many pumpkin sculptures over her career, this particular pumpkin is 8-feet tall and covered in the artist’s signature polka-dot effect, in this case, using yellow and black. I learned something new about her pumpkin artworks, in that her original inspiration for using pumpkins as a theme in her art comes from an experience she had as a child: she was with her grandfather at a nursery, and according to the artist, when she reached to pick the pumpkin, she says that it spoke to her!
